It is ...I found this novel simply superbly written. It is in between The Alchemist by Cuelho (which pales in comparison) and 100 years of solitude. The story, the dialogues and all the myths, not to forget the forgotten words and forgotten ways to describe novelties happening around back then. It was a magical word. However, I was left perplexed by the ending. It fits with the story but still, to me it was disappointing. It fits the story and it fits from a historic point of view but it does not fit with Yusuf's character and evolution up to that point. How would you interpret the ending?Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10789649987471086793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733562181298960207.post-33957970114396958022020-11-14T23:24:37.950-06:002020-11-14T23:24:37.950-06:00You've written elsewhere about the pitfalls of...You've written elsewhere about the pitfalls of using the term 'Arab/Islamic' slavery, but in this piece seem to rely on that very idea by jumping between Arab and Omani. This is exemplified in Vaid's attempt to use Muhammad Ali as a symbol of his own "traditional Islam" brand. According to this brand, Muhammad Ali rose to fame on the back of a heretical group (the NOI), using a haram means of fame and income (since these traditionalists hold boxing to be haram), openly said multiple times as a Sunni that he believed you did not have to be Muslim to go to heaven (so much for the traditional binary on belief), and openly admitted to having been an adulterer (I'm not saying this to "expose sin" but to expose the hypocrisy of "traditionalists" who claim that adulterers should be killed). If anything Muhammad Ali and the achievements he made for American Muslims were done on very similar lines to young American Muslims today - yet I can't imagine these traditionalist figures celebrating Halima Aden, for example.

Not to mention that American Muslim traditionalists are highly selective in the "tradition" they wish to implement. They want wives to obey husbands but they do not want men to be legally obligated to obey their parents in "everything that is not disobedience of God". They want to say that we live in an unprecedented age of sexual immorality but do not want to engage with the centrality of eunuchs in Muslim courts throughout history. They want to enjoin obedience to the local shaykh but do not want to obey the ruler in a Muslim country. They want to be disassociated from anti-minority violence, DV, and failed fundamentalist projects, but do not want to actually confront these beliefs within their own circles. One could go on!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733562181298960207.post-66827440074523943762019-03-25T20:12:30.325-05:002019-03-25T20:12:30.325-05:00why would you describe yourself as a ‘would-be rev...why would you describe yourself as a ‘would-be revolutionary’ then describe the violence of oppressed people against their oppressors ‘morally reprehensible’ in the comments? what am i missing about either the author or the meaning of ‘revolutionary’?idgihttp://readsettlers.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733562181298960207.post-24266018356122276072018-08-12T10:58:37.006-05:002018-08-12T10:58:37.006-05:00Yalab takabal dua...🙏🙏🙏Yalab takabal dua...🙏🙏🙏FARHADhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08238380055356940627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733562181298960207.post-79723708020368691612018-07-12T20:20:26.190-05:002018-07-12T20:20:26.190-05:00Awesome critique. I recall Khalid Yasin pandering to the same notion of Islam being some sort of theological "1st" in abolishing slavery. Why first thought is to go to Buddhist and East Asian religious societies that flat out were repulsed at the idea of slavery near 2500 years ago. It's horrible to get excited about the Deen addressing the issue only to say some cringeworthy nonsense that makes them look unlearned. Good post.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733562181298960207.post-83561705754146243792018-04-06T22:45:54.066-05:002018-04-06T22:45:54.066-05:00In the Quran God does say Jesus is God's W...In the Quran God does say Jesus is God's Word , but God also says that Jesus is like Adam , when God wants to create something , He just says " be" , it is created ( or comes into being ) . Then of course , Quran being the " word " does not make it uncreated . God also says that all souls were prexistant and had a contract with God . So are we all enternal and uncreated . We all know that all creation from God has His essense or breath . That does not make us co-enternal with God . Of course God can change his law s , He created his laws , did not He . Even during the Quranic reveletion , Laws were changed . We do talk about the context specific nature of many reveletion in the Quran . If the reveletion were not contextualized , it would not have been helpful to the Arabs . Quran also states that the reveletion has come into Arabic , so that Arabs can understand it . Also all people had prophets . I guess they did not get reveletion in Arabic . If we consider that Jews and Christians also had reveletion from God , then we had to agree that those reveletions were also enternal and cant be changed .
